Video surveillance with WiFi

Video surveillance with WiFi cameras is always an option where laying cables for the network cable is too complicated or not feasible at all - for private and Commercial use


As a rule, WiFi cameras work with the 2.4GHz frequency. There are only very few suppliers of WiFi surveillance cameras that work with 5GHz.

Is the transmission of video signals with WiFi cameras secure?

The outdated encryption method WEP has been replaced by WPA and WPA2 encryption, so that a high level of security is guaranteed. It is also important to use a new, individual password when you receive the WLAN camera, as a simple default password was entered in the delivery status. You should use a secure password consisting of a combination of numbers, letters and special characters with at least 8 characters. This is the only way to ensure reliable protection.

 


How reliable is video surveillance with WLAN cameras?

When installing video surveillance with WiFi cameras, you should make sure that the distance between the WiFi router and the WiFi camera does not exceed 15 metres. Depending on the conditions (clear view between router and camera, masonry, etc.) it can be more or less.
If the distance is longer or the transmission is worse, it often helps to use a so-called WiFi repeater between the WiFi router and the WiFi camera, which is located approximately in the middle of the two devices. This increases the WiFi performance and also the possible distance. If in doubt, several WiFi repeaters can be used.
If these conditions are met, smooth transmission of the video signals is guaranteed.

 

How does a WiFi camera actually work?

Video surveillance with WiFi cameras is an IP technology that enables live videos as well as videos recorded on the SD card to be accessed from anywhere via a smartphone or tablet. All WiFi cameras are IP cameras that connect to your home router via WiFi.
WLAN cameras are generally suitable for use inside buildings and outdoors. The quality is designed for robust outdoor use over many years.


For what purpose are WiFi cameras suitable?

There are many different requirements for a WiFi camera: In general, so-called fixed cameras are suitable for monitoring a specific angle, usually 90° monitoring.
If a larger area is to be monitored, rotatable WiFi cameras, so-called PTZ cameras, which can be panned and tilted via the APP, are a good choice. Many of these PTZ cameras also have an optical zoom (4x, 5x, 10x or 22x), which can also be controlled via the APP.
If there is a risk of vandalism, the WiFi camera should have vandalism protection, which is identified with the IK ... classification. However, this is rather rare if you make sure that the WiFi camera is installed at a height of more than 2.50m - 3m.

Recording videos from the WiFi camera

Accessing the WiFi camera via APP shows live videos. However, it is often necessary to see what happened in the past. For example, if you notice that something is missing in the live view, it would be important to access recorded data that shows the situation hours ago. This can only be represented by the recording of the video signals.

 


Video recording can be done in 3 ways:

Ø storage on SD card in the WiFi camera
Ø Storage on a cloud server of the manufacturer
Ø Storage on a local NVR recorder

Storage on SD card

Most WiFi cameras have an SD card slot that allows the use of an SD card for recording.
Our clear recommendation for card recording is the use of a Sandik "Extreme" card with 128GB.

With this card, a WiFi camera with Full HD 2MP resolution can record continuously for about 3 days before the SD card is automatically reloaded.

Another recording option is the calendar function. Here you can determine the times and days on which the WiFi camera should record.

Many users also use the recording after motion detection: when the wireless camera detects an object, it automatically starts recording on the SD Card.

Storage of the video data in a cloud

Some manufacturers offer recording to a cloud server, so that all data is secured on an external medium. However, additional costs must be expected here, as the data is stored with an external provider, which is not always positive.


Recording to an NVR recorder

If more than one camera is installed, this is the best solution for storing the data.

There are NVR recorders with 4, 8, 16 or more video inputs, so this option is more likely to be considered for larger video surveillance with Wi-Fi cameras.

 

Can I also see the videos on my smartphone?

Since P2P (Point to Point) technology has become popular, setting up video surveillance with Wi-Fi cameras has become very easy. In the past, complicated router settings were necessary to access the cameras from outside. Today, this can be done in a few minutes and without specialist knowledge.

You can watch the live videos and also the videos recorded on the SD card from anywhere, even if you are on holiday abroad.

Each manufacturer offers suitable APPs for this purpose, which you can download free of charge for your smartphone operating system (Playstore for Android devices and Applestore for iOS devices).

As soon as the APP is downloaded and the WiFi camera is integrated, you can perform many additional functions such as panning, tilting or zooming in addition to viewing the videos.

You can also use the APP to set the zones and the sensitivity of the motion detection, which sends you a push message to your mobile phone in the event of an alarm.

If you are on the move and the mobile phone reception is too weak, you can reduce the data to be transmitted via the app: this way, the image is displayed in a lower image quality, but also transmitted more smoothly.

 

 

What should you look for in a good video surveillance system with Wi-Fi cameras?

In addition to the functions listed below, the first thing to look for is the desired viewing angle.
Most WiFi cameras as fixed cameras have a viewing angle of 80° to 100°, which covers most of the area to be monitored.

The design of the WiFi camera is either a dome version (hemisphere) or a bullet version (elongated shape). Indoors, in warehouses or in house entrances, the dome version is more suitable; for all other outdoor applications, it should be a bullet version.

 

Depending on the model, WiFi IP cameras have the following functions:

Ø Built-in infrared night vision LED (IR)

Ø Integrated motion alarm

Ø SD card slot for the use of an SD card

Ø Built-in microphone / loudspeaker for bi-directional communication

Ø Full HD resolution or higher

Ø Fixed or variable lens angle

Ø Integrated night vision IR

 

Most WiFi cameras have built-in IR night vision LEDs: At dusk, when the camera sensor can no longer reproduce the clean colour image, the IR LEDs switch on.

Since the IR LEDs operate in a spectrum above our range of vision, i.e. also above the colour spectrum, the videos are displayed in black and white, but with the same level of detail. For us, the scene is pitch black, but for the sensor it is as bright as day.

Nowadays, these IR LEDs are very powerful and have a range of up to 200 metres.


Rotate and tilt

With a so-called PTZ camera, you can control the WiFi camera via the APP so that larger areas can also be monitored. However, bear in mind that a PTZ camera must also be actively operated.

If larger areas than 90° are to be monitored, a PTZ (P for pan, T for tilt and Z for zoom) camera is more suitable.


Video motion detection

With motion detection, the camera sensor detects moving objects in front of the lens and triggers an alarm, sending a push message to your mobile phone and/or recording the alarm sequence on the SD card in parallel.

Another option is to transfer the alarm video sequence to an ftp server. This way you have the alarm videos on an external, secure location.


Built-in microphone / loudspeaker

Many WiFi cameras have a built-in loudspeaker and also a built-in microphone. This provides bi-directional communication between the camera and your smartphone.

Please note that audio recording is not permitted in public spaces.


Full HD resolution or higher

The days of poor image resolution in video surveillance with WiFi cameras are fortunately over. Today, WiFi cameras have at least 2 megapixels (Full HD) or higher.

If details in the image are important, especially when the object is further away, 5 megapixel resolution should be used instead of 2MP.
